‘Child Rapists’ Among Arrestees In Raids On Unlicensed Contractors

by administrator · Comments 0

“State investigators targeted unlicensed contractors in Los Angeles and Orange counties in undercover sting operations conducted this week, officials said Friday.

KNX 1070’s Mike Landa reports investigators with the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) posed as homeowners requesting bids for home improvements to catch suspects offering to do work that requires a state contractor license.

The operation resulted in a total of 78 arrests, including at least one registered sex offender, repeat offenders, people with arrest warrants, revoked licensees, and people who illegally used the license of a legitimate contractor, CSLB spokesman Rick Lopes said.”

Unlicensed bidder loses Miss. jail project award

by administrator · Comments 0

“A Jackson man without a state contractor’s license won’t get to do about $100,000 in repairs to the roof of the Hinds County Jail after all.

Henderson in late 2011 was one of nearly 200 people convicted of felonies granted pardons or early release by then-Gov. Haley Barbour. Henderson’s record was wiped clean of felony convictions, including two for possession of cocaine and three for receiving stolen property.

At that Nov. 5 meeting, District 1 Supervisor and board president Robert Graham asked Henderson if he had a valid contractor’s license; Henderson said he did. Graham, however, said a computer search showed no evidence of such a license. The board awarded him a $97,000 contract over the objections of Timothy Lewis, the county’s purchasing officer, and county administrator Carmen Davis.

The contract award, however, was contingent on proof that Henderson has a valid contractor’s license and meets all other requirements.

Since then, Mississippi Board of State Contractors division director Charles Sharman has said there is no commercial or residential contractor’s license held by Henderson or his business.”

BSO: Sting Nets Arrests Of 19 Unlicensed Contractors

by administrator · Comments 0

“Broward County’s Licensing and Consumer Protection Division county issued 19 citations, the Florida Division of Insurance Fraud charged 7 people with worker’s compensation violations and the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulations issued cease and desist orders to 7 people.

The sting focused on contractors from many trades — plumbing, painting, electrical and other disciplines. What they had in common, investigators say, is a failure to be properly licensed in their trade in Broward County.”

Make sure all contractors are properly licensed before hiring them to perform work. Be Sure.

Eight unlicensed contractors cited in DA sting in Mendocino Co.

by administrator · Comments 0

“Eight people were arrested last week during a sting conducted by the Mendocino County District Attorney’s Office and the Contractors State Licensing Board to investigate phony contractors in the Ukiah Valley area.

There an undercover state investigator posed as the homeowner and asked for bids on projects at the home. The contractors who bid more than the unlicensed legal limit of $500 for labor and materials received a citation to appear in Superior Court for a misdemeanor charge of contracting without a license.

One of the men cited is convicted murderer Jameson “James” Jackson, who was found guilty in 2001 of being involved in the shooting death of Joan LeFeat in Willits, Eyster said. Jackson served nine years in the California Youth Authority before being released on parole in 2010.

Others cited last week have convictions on their records for drugs, guns, assault and domestic violence.”

Dozens arrested in unlicensed contractor sting

by administrator · Comments 0

“Simms was among dozens of suspects lured to the Cooper City home and taken into custody Wednesday and Thursday during a multiagency operation targeting unlicensed contractors. Of the more than 30 suspects arrested over two days, 14 were released and given notices to appear in court. Additionally, dozens of criminal traffic citations and civil citations were issued.

“We’ve brought these individuals here because they have a history of noncompliance or citation, in many cases an extensive history,” said Belyeu, a detective with the sheriff’s economic crimes unit. “That’s why we’ve isolated them as a problem to the consumer as well as the industry.”

Curbing illegal home improvements, officials say, has been an elusive goal in South Florida amid the downturn in the economy: Unemployed workers contract without a license as an easy way to make money. And some homeowners turn a blind eye to the unlicensed work for bargain prices.

Homeowners who don’t scrutinize whether someone is licensed may inadvertently invite a criminal inside their home, officials say.

“The latest trend that we’ve noticed is that about 60 percent of the respondents to our operations have extensive criminal histories that include felonies,” Belyeu said. “Everything from sexual abuse to aggravated battery. We’ve even had a murderer show up at one of our things.”

“An unlicensed contractor from Cameron Park was arrested earlier this week on charges that included abandoning a commercial remodeling job last year in Sutter County, the Contractors State License Board reported Wednesday.

Robert E. Omohundro, Jr., 59, was arrested Tuesday in Rancho Cordova and booked into the Sacramento County Jail on suspicion of misrepresenting himself as a licensed contractor and contracting without a license, board Registrar Steve Sands said in a statement.”

Contractor dispute sparks airport probe

by administrator · Comments 0

“The Contractors State License Board is investigating allegations that unlicensed contractors worked on Sacramento International Airport’s new $1 billion terminal. The action was prompted by complaints from subcontractors who say they are still owed more than $2.5 million on the project.

Licensed subcontractors have filed more than 30 mechanics’ liens for work on the restaurants and retail portions of the new terminal.”
