“The general contractor on William Monroe High School’s athletic facilities project has defaulted, according to Greene County Schools Superintendent Dr. David C. Jeck.
But that doesn’t mean the project, which is nearly complete, won’t be finished.
Instead, Greene County Schools’ payments to general contractor Breakell Inc. of Roanoke will be made to the Hanover Insurance Group, the company’s bonding agent and insurer.
“They were unable to pay their subs,” Jeck said, referring to the subcontractors on the project. “Now the project has been taken over by their insurance company.”
Jeck said Breakell had underbid the project, and was forced to make several major repairs along the way. Construction started on the $5.1 million overall project in March 2011 and was supposed to be completed Jan. 20. The project is already six months over schedule.”
